Farsangi mámor (frame scan)
Description
Scanned section of the colour tinted nitrate fragment, which survived in the Deutsche Kinemathek's collection, originally produced to aid its identification via LOST FILMS. The scan shows Erzsi B. Marton in her role as Mary. Erzsi B. Marton (1885-1925) graduated from the theatre school of Vígszínház (Comedy Theatre of Budapest), which was one of the biggest in the Hungarian capital. She began her acting career in provincial theaters, where she became acquainted with Kálmán Balla, a theater director whom she later married. In 1917 she was called to Budapest to join the troupe of Magyar Színház (The Hungarian Theatre) by Laszlo Beöthy, who seven years previously had contracted a young actor by the name of Mihály Kertész (later to become famous as Michael Curitz in Hollwood). She came from the countryside with great ambitions but didn't receive sufficient roles. That same year, Mihály Kertész discovered her photogenic qualities when he gave her her start in films. She went on to play the lead female role in five of Kertész's films: Az utolsó hajnal (The Last Dawn, 1917), Tavasz a télben (Spring in Winter, 1917), A csúnya fiú (The Ugly Boy, 1918), A napraforgós hölgy (The Sunflower Woman, 1918) and Az ördög (The Devil, 1918). After Kertész moved to Vienna she made only one further appearance on screen, in Márton Garas' Farsangi mámor in 1921. She was a good actress and one of the finest theatrical phenomena of the era. A great future undoubtedly lay ahead for her but in 1925 she unexpectedly committed suicide. Gyöngyi Balogh / Oliver Hanley, 06.12.2010
