director: Wilhelm Dieterle, Berthold Viertel
years: 1930/ 1931
country: USA
Just after getting married to Stella, the young officer Robert has an accident in a plane, and is so seriously injured that he has to spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair. His mother keeps the hopelessness of his situation a secret from him. Years later Stella meets Robert’s brother Walter, and the two healthy young people fall in love. Robert’s mother finds out about the affair, and comes to the conviction that she must tell Robert the truth and ask him to free Stella from the marriage. That night, however, Robert dies. At first, Walter is suspected of having murdered his brother, but it turns out that the mother has poisoned her son to save him from finding out about his wife's infidelity.
