Commentary
George Eastman House in Rochester acquired a c.87m, 35mm coloured nitrate print of this film in 1962. Black and white preservation elements were made in 1974. A full colour preservation was carried out by Haghefilm Conservation Centre in Amsterdam in 2000. This latter version was screened as part of the 'German Avant-Garde Cinema of the 1920s' programme during the 19th Pordenone Silent Film Festival in Sacile, Italy, in October 2000. It is also featured on the 4th Lotte Reiniger DVD, 'Doktor Dolittle & Archivschätze', released in Germany by Absolut Medien in December 2008. A fragment was also believed to exist in the collection of the Netherlands Filmmuseum in Amsterdam under the title, 'De Verliefde Apotheker'. However, it turned out to be a different film, the exact identity of which remains unknown. Black and white preservation elements were made in 1978 and a full colour restoration was carried out in 2006. Although it does not correspond to the Reiniger film, the restored colour version of 'De Verliefde Apotheker' is also featured on the 4th Lotte Reiniger DVD.
