The following (character) names appear on the film stills: - Mona Hartly: Protects the poor & the unhappy people. - Mary Davenport: Her friend & co-worker. - Thomas Reynolds: Became rich by devious means, known as the parasite. - Ronald Maxwell: Rich and generous man. - Tom Stalling: Without permanent livelihood. - Durkin: Fortune-hunter. - Wentworth: His accomplice. In the story, a poor and lonely widow seems to be involved seeking for financial help. Some important correspondence turns up in the hands of Reynolds. ![]() ![]() Great work, David and Elif. As a curio: internet users can find a publicity photo taken at the Kalem studios while the series was still in production on the Remapping L.A. website. Oliver Hanley, Deutsche Kinemathek, 09.11.2010 Thanks to great help from David Kiehn, I think we have finally identified this film!
To begin with, we have found a rather similar fragment from the same series starring Marin Sais and Oliie Kirkby. Our attempts to identify it, led us to this fragment. It is clear that this film belongs to the same series. In the end David was able to identify both episodes. About this fragment he writes; I looked and found out it is The Parasite, Episode 3 of The Social Pirates, released 10 April 1916. Mona Davenport is Marin Sais, Mary Hartley is Ollie Kirkby, Thomas Reynolds is played by Frank Jonasson, Quong Lee is played by Thomas Lingham, Stallings is played by Paul Hurst, Reynolds' butler is Edward Clisbee, Mrs. Wharton is Jess Whitney. The synopsis begins: "An affair of school days, when she wrote many foolish letters, has placed Mrs. Wharton in the clutches of Reynolds, a clever society blackmailer.... Mona, by a clever ruse, secures a position in the blackmailer's household. When she learns that Reynolds keeps the papers and letters that form so large a part of his stock in trade under guard in a safe she instructs Mary to call in the aid of Stallings, a well known cracksman." Parasite is in MPW 29 April 1916, page 851 Elif Rongen, 08.11.2010 The views expressed here belong to the author of the comment and do not necessarily reflect the opinions of Deutsche Kinemathek.
