A home by the seaside. An oddly dressed young man: prince-nez on the tip of his nose, sou'wester, black suit, white band collar, large lollipop in his hand. An old couple, his parents, the father also wearing a sou'wester, a medal pinned to his chest [frame scan 1]. IT: "Liebes Kind, Du mußt jetzt für dich selbst sorgen." ("Dear child, you must now fend for yourself.") [frame scan 2] The lollipop gets caught in the mother's hair. The father hands his son a bundle of clothes. IT: "Also lebewohl - blieb hübsch brav." ("Well then, farewell – Stay clean & honest.") Exaggerated sentimental goodbye from the mother. Exaggerated crying [frame scan 3]. Goodbye from the father. Lollipop sticks to his hand. Father gives his son a kick in the behind. Mother: "Sieh zu, daß Du nicht in die Netze der Frauen gerätst!" ("Promise that you won't get caught in the webs of women!") He promises.
