director: Romeo Bosetti, Paul Bertho
year: 1912 country: France history notes: Unidentified Film No. 179 alternative titles: Schirm-Verwechslung This film has been identified thanks to contributions from members of the Lost FIlms community. A rotund woman (mother-in-law?) finds a hair on her son-in-law's (?) jacket. She takes a close look at it and identifies it as an unfamiliar hair. She swears revenge [frame scan 1] and pours ink [frame scan 2] into his closed umbrella. The man leaves the house, taking the umbrella with him. He meets a friend on the street; the mother-in-law follows the events in the background. IT: "Schirm-Verwechslung." (Umbrella Mix-up) [frame scan 3]. The two friends sit down at an outdoor table at a coffee-house. As they get up, however, they mix up the umbrellas. The friend crosses the street with a woman dressed completely in white. The mother-in-law, again in the background, looks on as the woman opens the loaded umbrella and gets covered in the ink! [frame scan 4] In front of the house: Discussion! [frame scan 5 & 6]. The man takes his mother-in-law to task [frame scan 7]. She asks for his forgiveness. Jeanpaul Goergen, Deutsche Kinemathek, 06.10.2010 Production Company: Éclair, Paris

![]() ![]() It looks like Elif Rongen is absolutely correct. One of the places where you can find the poster online is on the CinEmotions website (Click here for a direct link). Oliver Hanley, Deutsche Kinemathek, 16.10.2010 The 'rotund woman' appears to be Sarah Duhamel, meaning that this is presumably one of her Pétronille series of comedies for Éclair. Robert Kiss, 12.10.2010 The substitute title given by the archive is taken from the first (and only) intertitle: "Schirm-Verwechslung. [Logo] Éclair Paris / Freie Vereinigung der Kinofilm-Fabrikanten." ("Umbrella Mix-up. [Logo] Éclair Paris / Free Association of Film Makers") Jeanpaul Goergen, Deutsche Kinemathek, 06.10.2010 Yes, this is definitely Sarah Duhamel, and the film looks like it might be GAVROCHE ET SA BELLE-MERE by Paul Bertho.
On the internet there are posters of that film that clearly show a mix-up with two umbrella's. Elif Rongen EYE Film Instituut Nederland Elif Rongen, 15.10.2010 The views expressed here belong to the author of the comment and do not necessarily reflect the opinions of Deutsche Kinemathek.
