No doubt, a Tonbild. Looks more like a Zigeunerbaron than a Bettelstudent to me, Make a dvd and send it to Christian Zwarg, (chris@truesoundtransfers.de) who knows all one can know in this world about the stuff and might have the disk...

I saw this once back during a film festival in Virginia. it was about a count trying to charm some ladies he fails and tries to dress up as a solider and impress them. He still fails and then he starts to dance when a bandit breaks into the castle. The count kills the bandit with his sword and all the girls fall for him.

It was odd because the ending is a devil jumping down from the ceiling and then the real ends it was about 7 mins long and had subtitles that made little sense. It was called The Count and The Bandit.

Complete but without main title. Identified as a production of "Duskes Kinematographen- und Film-Fabriken GmbH, Berlin" from the logo in the scenery. Style of the film clearly resembles a "Tonbild" (lit: 'Sound Picture'; sound film experiments from the early years of cinema), which Duskes distributed with the tag "Cinephon". Date given as 1908 for the reason that this is the period applicable to Duskes sound films.

From which film does this musical number originate? Perhaps "Der Bettelstudent, Große Szene I. Akt: Auftritt des Obersten Ollendorf: 'Ach ich hab sie ja nur auf die Schulter geküßt'" (starring Franz Porten)? Or from "Der Troubadour"? At least two Troubadour sound films were available from Duskes: "Der Troubadour: In unser Heimat" and "Der Troubadour: Mein letzter Hauch".
