Africa. A lion. A foreign hunting party on horseback, accompanied by their native helpers. They shoot at the lion [frame scan 1], which falls into a stream. / IT: "Käthe, vor Müdigkeit überwältigt, wird von den Freunden nicht bemerkt, da sie unter einem Vorsprung schlummert" (Käthe's friends don't notice that she has collapsed from fatigue under a ledge) [frame scans 2 & 3] / Although warned by their helpers, the party enters a straw hut [frame scan 4] / Käthe comes round and arms herself with a rifle [frame scan 5] / The hunting party finds a scrap of Käthe's dress. - Despair spreads! / The hunting party returns to its camp. / Käthe uses the rifle as a crutch. She comes across a lion cub [frame scan 6 & 7]. / IT: "Nach tage- und nächtelangem ergebnislosen Suchen wird Käthe als verloren aufgegeben." (After a vain search for days and nights, Käthe is forsaken as lost) Grief stricken, the hunting party ups sticks [frame scan 8].

The film is IN THE MIDST OF THE JUNGLE, produced by the Selig Polyscope Company, released in the United States on October 20, 1913. The film was directed by Henri McRea, and starred Kathlyn Williams. Shot on the backlot of the Selig Zoo in Los Angeles. This was released two months before chapter one of THE ADVENTURES OF KATHLYN, which premiered in the US on December 29, 1913. The frames posted here from IN THE MIDST OF THE JUNGLE come from the end of the second reel and the beginning of the third reel of this three-reel feature. The first and second reels are known to exist, though they miss the opening titles; nothing from the third reel was known to exist until now. Thank you!

I believe the actress appearing here is American actress Kathlyn Williams, who was a big star with Selig in the 'teens in Chicago. She made a serial adventure film called "The Adventures of Kathlyn" in 1916, in which she plays "Kathlyn Hare", who has many "cliffhanger" adventures.
