Extract from a German fiction film, set in Hamburg, probably dating from the early 1930's.
A harbour. A man crosses over from a ship to a barge [frame scan 1]. He greets a policeman. A barge from Cuxhaven docks [frame scan 2] (at this point just atmospheric harbour sounds to be heard). - Night. Illuminated nightclub: "Dietrich Menke Konditorei, Tanz in den unteren Räumen." (Dietrich Menke Confectioner, dancing in the rooms downstairs) [frame scan 3] - A girl with an accordion sitting atop a white horse is led onto the dance floor [frame scans 4]. Laughter. The cook. Close-ups of the audience members. Singing: "Mein Schatz ist ein Matrose..." (My Baby is a Sailor...) Sign on the wall: "Reiten 25 Pf., Galopp 1 Mk." (Ride 25 Pfennigs, Gallop 1 Mark). An American tap dancer with a banjo [frame scans 5&6], sings in English.
